My name is Arianna Thomas, I’m a junior at Adelphi university, and I am currently studying Spanish, French, and in the STEP program, with a goal to become a Spanish teacher. This summer I had the great privilege of participating in a study abroad program in France. While abroad I attended the Institute for American Universities, and took a class that explored the works of various French writers and artists. My place of residence was in a breath-taking, elegant but quaint city of Aix-en-Provence, in southern France. This was my first adventure in Europe, therefore, I was extremely eager to immerse myself into the culture, as well as, practice my French. During my time abroad, I did have some moments of culture shock and the feeling as if I didn’t belong. However, to remedy these emotions and my wavering periods of feeling homesick, I found solace in the charming brasseries, or majestic natural of southern France such as the Gorges du Verdon, the endless miles of lavender fields whose beauty lingers in your mind or the soothing waters of the French Riviera.

On a whole, my study experience was definitely a worthwhile, and I highly encourage my fellow Adelphi colleagues to take a journey into the unknown to explore the culture of another country while, partake in self-exploration of the mind and soul.

Celebrating Diversity/ Film Festival 2017

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH 2017 at 3:00 pm.
La Yuma (La Yuma) by Florence Jaugey/ 2011/Nicaragua/ 91 min.
Presented by: Dr. Pepa Anastasio (Hofstra University).
Nicaragua’s first full-length feature in 20 years, La Yuma tells the story of a young woman who dreams of transcending her bleak life in the slums of Managua by becoming a boxer. Looking beyond the meager possibilities that seem available to her (and ignoring the advice of her gang-member friends), she finds solace and hope in her training and falls in love with a middle-class journalism student. With an extraordinary performance by Alma Blanco as Yuma, the strength, astuteness and determination of the main character reflect the feelings of a population that faces adversity and inequality. Jaugey’s film allows us the rare opportunity to get a glimpse of life in this Central American country where gender and class inequality are an everyday challenge.

French Program/ Daniella Vollaric in Paris

"I've been in France for a little over a month now, so I just wanted to check in and say hello. It's still difficult to be here so far away from my home and family, but I'm sure now that I absolutely made the right choice in coming here. In just this short time, I've already been lucky enough to make some friends, travel a little, and learn a lot. It's incredible to think about how far I've come and how much has happened in such a short time here, so I can't wait to see what will happen in the next 6 months. I'm also in luck that Sean has decided to spend another year in France, so we plan to meet up in Paris some time soon. A little Adelphi reunion!

I also really want to thank you all again. Without your letters of recommendation, emotional support, and words of encouragement, I wouldn't be here. And that would have been a terrible mistake. So thank you for convincing me that I could handle this when I was so unsure about my decision. It really means a lot to me, and I'll always be appreciative of your help. I hope all is well with all of you and the department, and I very much look forward to coming to visit when I return home."
