Scholarships recipients and Honor Soieties Induction Ceremony

A DAY OF CELEBRATION1

Yesterday the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department held the National Honor Societies Induction Ceremony where we presented for the first time the following Scholarships and Writing Contest recipients. President, Dr. Scott and Dean Sam Grogg were among those present, together with Associate Deans Dr. Susan Briziarelli, Dr. Ruth McShane and Dr. Gary Schacter.

Also trustee and benefactor Mr. Patrick Smalley, alumni and benefactor, Mr. Robert Hartmann and professor and benefactor Dr. David Prottas.

National Italian Honor Society

The Gamma Kappa Alpha National Italian Honor Society is a society formed to acknowledge superior scholastic performance in the field of Italian language, literature and culture, and is open to membership at the institutions of higher learning in the United States and Canada. The Society encourages college students to acquire a greater interest in, and a deeper understanding of, Italian culture, art and history. The organization recognizes outstanding undergraduate scholarship in the field of Italian.

National Spanish Honor Society

Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society (La Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hispánica), was established on November 14, 1919, at the University of California Berkeley.  The Society's insignia is the royal seal of Fernando and Isabel, representing Castille, León and Aragón.  Sigma Delta Pi's colors are red and gold, its flower is the red carnation, and its motto is the Greek phrase "Spanías Didagéi Proágomen" meaning "Let's go forth/continue forth under the teaching/guidance of the Spanish language."
