Job opportunities!

There is an IMMEDIATE JOB OPENING for an ITALIAN/SPANISH TEACHER at two Catholic schools in Queens.

Who is eligible to apply: If you speak Italian and Spanish, and have teaching experience, you are highly encouraged to apply. If you speak Spanish, but not Italian, you should still consider applying. (The level of Italian taught is for novice students, so an intelligent Spanish teacher would be able to create Italian lessons.) NYS Teacher Certification is NOT necessary. Previous teaching experience is a plus, but not necessary. However, the candidate certainly must respect and cherish children. This position is excellent for those needing steady income (biweekly salary), or for those who wish to add a teacher position to their resume. University students can handle the workload of this full-time job and evening classes simultaneously. Must be an American citizen or with some type of green card/eligible working visa, etc.
What is taught:
Ridgewood school: Basic Italian, Nursery (3 years old) through 8th grade
Bayside school: Basic Spanish, Nursery (3 years old) through 3rd grade
Basic Italian, 4th grade through 8th grade
580 students total
Do not allow the number of students to discourage you. As the teacher, you will meet with each class of students for 45 minutes once a week. You will meet with each Nursery and Pre-K class for only 30 minutes once a week. It is certainly not expected that students will become fluent with 30-45 minutes of foreign language once a week. Rather, these courses are meant to be an introduction to World Languages and Cultures, and to inspire the students to be curious about the world around them. The principals want the kids to have fun, and walk out of Italian and Spanish class with a smile on their faces. Thusly, all projects are completed in-class and there is never homework.

Where: One school is in Bayside and the other is in Ridgewood. Both schools are located in Queens, and belong to the Diocese of Brooklyn, Archdiocese of New York. School names can be released upon request. There are parking lots at both schools with available spaces for teachers. All of the teachers park in the lot at the Ridgewood school, because parking on the street there is difficult. Most teachers park on the street in Bayside, because parking there is very easy. There is public transportation (MTA subway, bus, LIRR)  near these schools, as well.

When: The sooner the candidate can begin, the better. Ideally, the candidate can start coming in and training the week of October 16, 2017. The schools definitely need the teacher to begin by Monday October 30, 2017. This will be a one-year contractual position. The Diocese of Brooklyn’s school year ends around June 15, 2018.

Work schedule: Monday through Friday; most national holidays off, some Catholic holidays off
Ideally, the teacher should arrive at the school at 7:00AM. The teacher should be in the building no later than 7:30AM. The teacher can leave the building after 2:40PM (unless otherwise instructed by the principal). These times apply to both schools.

Salary: The teacher can expect to receive a net salary around $23,000 for completing one year of teaching, if they begin working on Monday October 30, 2017. Net salary means the salary you receive AFTER deductions are made for taxes, Social Security, Medicare, Paid Family Leave, etc. This is NOT an exact calculation, nor a guarantee. Upon being offered the position, the principals will share the exact salary that is appropriate for the particular candidate with him or her. There is an open opportunity to work at the after-school program at the Bayside school for extra salary, if so desired.

Benefits: As a full-time position, the teacher will be eligible to receive healthcare and dental insurance through the Diocese of Brooklyn, if so desired. There is also a pre-tax savings plan, for funds that can only be accessed once the employee retires. The employee can opt into this retirement savings plan whenever he/she so desires. If the employee chooses to work part-time (three days or less per week), he/she is ineligible for healthcare/dental/retirement savings benefits.

If the candidate is hired by Thursday October 26, 2017, the current teacher, who is moving away on Saturday October 28, 2017, would be happy to train the new teacher and give him/her as many resources as possible. It would be very helpful to the new teacher to meet with the current one to go over lesson plans, etc., if at all possible.

The principals, faculty, students, and parents at both schools are excellent. Working at these schools is a pleasure and a joy. I, the current Italian and Spanish teacher, promised to help my principals in the search for a replacement teacher because I have respect and esteem for them and their amazing work. You will have a lot of fun at their schools!
