TRA 210  Western Translation Theory	3	None	Students will discuss the basic theories that have informed the way in which translation has been seen in the West during the past twenty centuries.   This course serves as an introduction to translation across languages and will be taught in English.
(FRE/SPA/ITA) 231 Cross Cultural Concepts	3	Level IV Language Course or pass proficiency exam	Students examine the way of life of a people to understand their value systems as well as to achieve cross-cultural communication and understanding. The use a variety of sources to help them identify those cultural patterns intrinsic to a society.
TRA 345 Introduction to Interpreting	3	(FRE/SPA/ITA) 231 or 251 for AU Language majors, Proof of Proficiency for Non-Language Majors	Students are introduced to language interpreting. This includes interpreting for legal, educational and medical settings. The course focuses on simultaneous interpreting, consecutive (bilateral) interpreting, sight translation and ethical issues in interpreting.
(FRE/SPA/ITA) 252 Grammar and Composition	3	(FRE/SPA/ITA) 231 or 251 for  AU Language majors, Proof of Proficiency for Non-Language Majors	Students review Spanish grammar systematically, from rudimentary to more advanced concepts of usage and idiomatic expressions, in order to increase their competence in written and oral Spanish.
(FRE/SPA/ITA) 344 Translation Techniques	3	Spa 252	Students review the idiomatic expressions, cognates (true and false) and common usage that give language its unique character. They practice translating, from English into Spanish and from Spanish into English, a wide variety of formal and informal texts.
TRA 455 Advanced Translation	3	(FRE/SPA/ITA) TRA 345 and (FRE/SPA/ITA) 344	This non-language specific course is designed for students to complete an extensive translation from English into another language on a project in a specialized field (medicine, law, or literature) and a commentary, which will discuss challenges students encounter and their strategies. There will also be discussion regarding translation stages, management and quality control.
