I am very pleased to inform your that Catherine Olsen has been granted a TAPIF! The Teaching Assistant Program in France will allow her to live and teach in France next year. She is our fourth graduate in the past three years to apply for and receive this prestigious award. Better still, her assignment is in the gorgeous Champagne region!
Catherine is Dr. Wadhera's advisee and a valued French tutor in our department. A double-major in History and French, she is also in the Honors College. She presented at Research Day on her thesis which analyzed how France’s memory of World War II has changed as time has passed. She has received an array of awards from Adelphi, including membership in the Dean’s Circle from 2015 to 2018, the Pesselier Vazquez Scholarship for French, the Clara Bartlett scholarship for History, and the Chester Barrows L. Award for History. In addition, she is a member of both the French and History Honors Societies. Outside of academics, she is a Captain on the Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field teams.
I just wanted to note that this makes a total of 7 French students in the past 7 years to win nationally competitive awards; we've had four TAPIF winners, 1 Fulbright, and 1 winner of the Société des Professeurs Français et Francophones d’Amérique summer study abroad scholarship.
Adelphi and the French Program at Adelphi are making a difference in these students' lives, but *they* are also contributing to raising Adelphi's profile, especially in Franco-American circles. Just like the University, the French program is, to echo President Riordan's words, "small but scrappy." (Or "petit mais fougueux").
